How do I upload files to my Website / Web Space?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

This is the language used for file transfer from one computer to another across the world wide web (www). It is used for website design to upload files from your computer to the computer (server) that is hosting your website.

You will usually have to set up a password protected ftp account for your site to allow you and only you to login and access the site. It is important that this is a good password to prevent anyone from interfering with your site.

There is an ftp application built in to FrontPage and Dream Weaver, but you may also decide to use a stand alone ftp.

There are benefits in using the built in software. FrontPage checks the server’s files against the computers files and tells you if any changes have happened. In practice it often says that files are in conflict when you have done nothing to either files. It has a nice feature that automatically puts a file you want uploaded in to the correct folder without selecting the correct folder on the server file list. With the ftp programs below you have to select the correct folder then upload the files. This can be time consuming when you have lots of individual files that need to go in lots of different folders.

Below are the two ftp’s I have used.

1.         Flash FXP (Free Trial) 25$

“FlashFXP is an extremely powerful and flexible FTP/FXP client. FlashFXP has become the defacto FTP/FXP client for those who want a simple, easy to use interface while incorporating all of the latest and greatest security, advanced options and new features that professionals demand. FlashFXP uses a familiar explorer like interface that even the most novice user can master in minutes.”

I would have to agree with the above. Another nice feature is that it allows ftp transfers from website to website cutting out the need to download your site if you are moving web hosting. Its much quicker.

2.            Filezilla (Free)

“FileZilla is a fast FTP and SFTP client for Windows with a lot of features. FileZilla Server is a reliable FTP server.”

“FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.”

Or

“FileZilla is a powerful FTP-client for Windows 9x, ME, NT4, 2000 and XP. It has been designed for ease of use and with support for as many features as possible, while still being fast and reliable. (See FileZilla history for more information)"

The main features of FileZilla are:

  • Ability to resume Uploads/Downloads (if the server supports it)

  • Custom Commands

  • Site Manager with folders

  • Keep Alive system

  • Timeout detection /p>

  • Firewall support

  • SOCKS4/5 and HTTP1.1 Proxy support

  • SSL secured connections

  • SFTP support

  • Upload/Download Queue

  • Drag & Drop

  • Multi-language support/p>

  • GSS authentication and encryption using Kerberos”

I have used filezilla with a lot of success. It’s very simple to use does the job very quickly and best of all its free. It does not have to polished look of flashfxp but it does basically the same (except website to website transfer).
